Words are powerful. They can affirm, encourage, glorify or cause trouble. The Bible has a lot to say about words. In Proverbs there are 31 chapters, one for each day of the month. There are 915 verses and 222 of then talk about the tongue making over 25% of Proverbs about the tongue. The Bible warns us about our words. Proverbs 6:2 “you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth.”

“And God Said…” in the very first few verses of Genesis begins with these words. God spoke and the world was formed. Through the statements of God, heaven, the universe and all of its mathematical calculations, our world, and the origin of humanity was created. Hebrews 11:3 “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.”

In the Old Testament, God chose people to be leaders and prophets to His people, the Israelites. God then advanced His Kingdom of Light through their spoken words. The Israelites and their leaders often experienced dramatic evidence of the power of their words.

Just as God had chosen to advance His Kingdom through the spoken words of His leaders and prophets, He then began advancing His kingdom through the words and person of Jesus Christ, …the Word.

In the book of John, he writes the “Word Became Flesh”. John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Vs14 “the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth”. Matthew 17:5 and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love: with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”

The people of Jesus’ day were not only amazed at the compelling authority of His words but the demonstration of the power of His spoken words as He performed miracle after miracle.

Jesus came proclaiming the word of God. Jesus said “Amen”, so be it or let the Father’s will be done. Words then are the official announcement of God’s will.

The Church can use the name of Jesus to cast out demons. Philippians 2:10 “that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.”

Our words have the ability to bless or curse that ultimately directs our path. James 3:9-10 “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth comes praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.” James 3:6 “The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole coarse of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”

We need to verbalize promises and blessings to strengthen and comfort us. In that way, we say what we hear so we can see what we say. It becomes a confession of our faith. Proverbs 18:13 “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them, finds mercy.” Isaiah 55:11 “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire.”

Word creates, shape and forms our world. Words become sentences. Sentences become messages. Messages become experiences and our experiences in life become our life’s lessons. Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

When we speak, it’s not only important to carefully select our words, but to be careful of the way we project our tone. It’s not always what we say, but how we say it. Proverbs 15:1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Sometimes it is better to be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt. Proverbs 17:28 “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” If you have nothing good to say, better to say nothing at all.

We have power over our lives with the words that we speak. The mouth can get us into trouble and can also get us out. There is a direction to freedom. Proverbs 12:6 “the mouth of the upright will deliver them.” Proverbs 12:18 “the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:14 “from the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things.”

We can repent from our words that curse. We change our patterns by repenting and turning away from our sinful behavior. We can choose to renounce and break the curses we have spoken. We then speak blessing to each other and loosen the grace of God. 2 Corinthians 1:20 “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him, the “Amen” is spoken by us to the Glory of God”.

Speak God’s word in the name of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit into your life concerning your particular situation. Declare a fresh new blessing into your life. God wants you to be free and to enjoy all that He has planned for you. Use words wisely.

By the power of our spoken words, the Bible offers many blessings of fulfillment, joy, fruitfulness, freedom, provision, protection, triumph, knowledge, wisdom, honor, health, grace, warnings, discernment and eternal life.
